Maroc(c)ans don’t cry

Soufiane Moussouli is angry: “I am not different, I was born here in the Netherlands, in the Flevo Hospital in Lelystad. So why am I different? What we see on television about Moroccans is normal, and if I behave decently I am different. It feels negative to me. Why don’t people just say, you are funny or you are nice?” Born in the Netherlands, but really a Moroccan. Or isn’t he? This is Soufiane Moussouli’s story. He will give a performance about his two identities, titled Marok(k)anen huilen niet. “People always say: you have to adapt to this society. And I do want to be Dutch. But the question really should be: Are we given the opportunity to hand in our identity?”

Maroc(c)ans don’t cry is a musical, funny, personal and sometimes poignant show about somebody who doesn’t know where he belongs. Many people in the Netherlands recognize this theme. It raises questions like: Where do I feel at home? What do I need to feel at home? The show was created for the International Storytelling Festival last year and returns this year, in English this time!
